Completing a past paper feels productive because it produces a score. The useful part is the evidence behind that score: what you can recall, which instructions you misread, where your method breaks down and what happens when time is limited. If you check the total and move straight to another paper, most of that information disappears.
You have a limited supply of matching papers. Boards may restrict recent materials for school mocks. Use older papers for learning and keep one unseen paper for a timed attempt near the exam.
Choose the exact paper you are actually studying
Start on your exam board's official website. Match the qualification, specification code, paper or component, exam series and, where relevant, Foundation or Higher tier. A paper for the wrong specification may contain unfamiliar content, omit topics you need or reward a different response style. The front page should also tell you the time allowed, equipment permitted and any materials supplied.
Ask your teacher before using the newest paper you can find. Your school may be saving it for a mock. If an official paper is locked, do not chase an unofficial copy. Choose an openly available paper, specimen paper or sample assessment material instead. For subjects with inserts, audio, pre-release material, data sheets or formulae sheets, download the complete set. Doing a source question without its source booklet is not a fair test of anything.

Decide what this attempt is for
Not every past-paper session needs full exam conditions. Early in revision, a paper is most useful as a map. Scan it, choose questions from topics you have studied and work without notes before checking them. Later, complete a mixed section to test whether you can choose methods without being told the topic. Use a full timed paper only when you have covered enough of the course for the total to mean something.
Write the mode at the top before starting. That stops an untimed learning attempt quietly becoming a pretend mock where you look up several answers but still treat the final percentage as a real score. Scores from different modes are not comparable, and that is fine. The purpose is to produce honest evidence about what to practise next.

Answer the paper, not the topic you hoped would appear
Read the whole instruction, including the command word, content being tested, context and any limit such as one reason or evidence from a named source. Underline only those functional parts. Highlighting half the question makes nothing stand out. If you are stuck, write the first relevant fact, formula, quotation idea or planning point you can justify, then move on and return later.
Show the work the subject requires. In maths and calculation-heavy science, a correct method may earn credit even if arithmetic later goes wrong, depending on the mark scheme. In English, history, economics or psychology, a list of remembered facts may not meet assessment objectives that require analysis, application or evaluation. In languages, the task, tense, register and communication requirements matter alongside accuracy. The specification and official examples are safer guides than a single answer formula found online.
Mark with the official scheme, slowly
Take a short break before marking so you are less tempted to reward what you meant. Read the general marking instructions as well as the answer beside each question. Symbols such as method marks, accuracy marks, follow-through, acceptable alternatives and levels differ between boards and subjects. Where a scheme gives indicative content, it may not be an exhaustive list. Where it uses level descriptors, decide which level best describes the response before choosing a mark within it.
Use three marks on your script: a tick for credit you can clearly justify, a question mark where you need a teacher to decide, and a circle around each lost or uncertain mark. Do not squeeze a generous mark out of ambiguous wording to protect your percentage. The useful result is the one that exposes the gap. If self-marking an essay is too uncertain, compare it with the descriptors and exemplar material, record a provisional band, then ask your teacher about one specific judgement.
Turn every useful finding into a small next action
A note saying “revise electricity” is too broad to act on. Convert each important loss into something you can complete and check. For example: “From memory, draw the circuit symbols in my specification, then answer three mixed circuit questions and check units.” An English task might be: “Plan two different arguments for an unseen extract in eight minutes, making each quotation serve the question.” The task should name the skill, the practice and how you will know it is done.
Prioritise patterns, not every isolated slip. A missing prerequisite that affected four questions matters more than an unusual one-mark fact. A command-word error repeated across subjects may be a better use of time than rewriting an entire topic. Put the most valuable two or three tasks into the next week and save the rest in a mistake tracker.

Retry after feedback instead of copying the answer
Reading the mark scheme can make an answer feel obvious because the correct idea is now in front of you. That feeling is not the same as being able to produce it later. Close the scheme, explain the correction in your own words and redo the part you missed. Then schedule a fresh but similar question after a gap. The exact gap can fit your timetable, but it must be long enough that you are retrieving the method rather than repeating a line you still remember visually.
For an extended response, do not memorise the scheme's indicative points as a model essay. Write a new plan for a related prompt, with a clear argument and evidence selected for that question. For a calculation, change the values or find another official question testing the same skill. For science explanation, practise rebuilding the causal chain from a blank page. Mark the error secure only after an independent retry.

How many past papers should I do?
There is no useful universal number. One paper that you mark, diagnose and revisit can teach you more than several rushed attempts. Use enough material to test the full specification, but keep at least one suitable paper unseen for a later timed rehearsal where possible.
Should I do past papers before I have finished the course?
Yes, but use selected questions or sections rather than treating the total score as a forecast. Check which topics you have covered, label the session as learning or diagnostic practice and save full-paper conclusions until most of the course is secure.
Can I use a paper from a different exam board?
