The usual response to a disappointing question is to write “revise this topic” beside it. That sounds sensible, but it gives you no starting point and no way to know when the revision has worked. A topic such as rates of reaction, algebra or power and conflict poetry contains several kinds of knowledge and several exam skills. Rereading everything may feel safe while leaving the original problem untouched.
A stronger task starts with evidence from your attempt. It identifies the first reason credit was lost, chooses an action that repairs it and finishes with a check. This turns a mark scheme from a record of the past into a plan for the next session.
Treat marks as signals, not instructions
A mark total tells you how the response was credited under that paper's scheme. It does not automatically tell you why the marks were unavailable. In a calculation, the issue could be recall of a formula, choosing the formula, rearranging, substitution, arithmetic, units or rounding. In a levels-based essay, the whole response might contain strong knowledge but weak application or an unsupported judgement. The same loss needs a different task depending on its cause.
Put the script, official mark scheme and specification beside each other. Find the earliest point where your work stops matching the required process or quality. If the scheme uses levels, look at the assessment objectives and descriptors rather than trying to assign one lost mark to one sentence. Mark schemes are designed differently across subjects, so your diagnosis should follow the actual board documents.
Use a four-part revision task
A task becomes usable when it names what you will do, what you will use, how much you will complete and how success will be checked. Compare “revise trigonometry” with “From memory, choose sine, cosine or tangent for eight mixed right-angled-triangle diagrams, then solve three and check each by estimating whether the answer is sensible.” The second task can be started, finished and reviewed.
Keep the finish line independent. Looking at the mark scheme until the correction makes sense is an input, not proof. The proof might be a fresh question completed without notes, a definition recalled accurately on two later days, an essay plan that meets every part of a new prompt or a calculation checked with correct units.

Find the first cause in the chain
Work backwards from the lost credit. Ask whether the required knowledge was available, whether you recognised when to use it, whether the method was reliable and whether the response was communicated in the form the question required. Then check timing and avoidable slips. Fixing the earliest broken link often repairs several later errors at once.
Imagine an original physics example where a student calculates energy using the wrong power because they read kilo as the base unit. The final arithmetic and unit are both wrong, but practising multiplication is not the priority. The first cause is unit conversion. By contrast, if the conversion is written correctly but the wrong relationship is selected, the task should practise choosing equations from the quantities in the question.

- Did I follow the command word, context and any limits in the task?

Convert the evidence into a subject-specific task
Useful tasks resemble the thinking that the exam requires. Flashcards can repair precise recall, but they cannot by themselves repair an inability to apply knowledge to an unfamiliar source. More full papers will expose a weak algebra prerequisite, but targeted algebra practice is likely to repair it faster. Choose the smallest activity that reproduces the difficult decision.

Prioritise by reach, recurrence and dependency
Do not turn every circled mark into tonight's work. First prioritise a prerequisite that blocks several topics, such as percentages affecting chemistry calculations and economics data response. Next look for a cause that repeats across a paper, such as failing to apply points to the scenario. Then consider high-frequency skills that appear in several components, such as graph interpretation or building a supported judgement.
Marks alone can be misleading. A rare twelve-mark question is not automatically a better priority than a two-mark skill that appears repeatedly. Equally, do not ignore extended writing because improvement is harder to count. Use the specification, your teacher's guidance and several attempts to judge reach. Choose two or three repairs for the next week and keep the rest in your mistake log.
Build a short repair session
A focused repair session can fit into twenty to forty-five minutes. Start by retrieving the essential knowledge or method before looking at notes. Study one correct example or a short section of guidance. Practise the difficult decision several times, then complete a fresh exam-style question without support. Finish by marking it and recording the next retry.
For example, a thirty-minute science session on interpreting practical data might use five minutes to recall variables and graph conventions, five minutes to inspect why the original response failed, twelve minutes for two fresh data sets, five minutes to mark and three minutes to state the remaining issue. The point is not the exact timing. It is that most of the session is spent producing and checking work.

Check the repair under new conditions
Immediate success can come from remembering the correction. Schedule a later question with different surface details and the same underlying skill. A maths question might use a different diagram. A history prompt might change the factor being judged. A biology question might place the same process in an unfamiliar organism or experiment. You are looking for transfer, not visual recognition.
Record one of three outcomes: secure, improving or unresolved. Secure means you selected and completed the approach without the correction. Improving means the method began correctly but still needed support or contained a specific weakness. Unresolved means the original cause was probably wrong or the prerequisite remains missing. In that case, rediagnose instead of assigning more of the same task.

Should every lost mark become a separate task?
No. Group marks that share one cause. A single task on unit conversion may repair several calculation errors. Correct isolated slips on the script and prioritise patterns, prerequisites and skills with wider reach.
How long should a revision task take?
Long enough to retrieve, practise and check one defined skill. Many repairs fit into twenty to forty-five minutes, but an extended essay skill may need several sessions. Split broad tasks until each one has a clear independent finish line.
What if I lost marks because I ran out of time?
Find the decision behind the timing problem. You may need quicker planning, a checkpoint, a shorter approach to low-tariff questions or practice moving on when stuck. Simply doing more timed papers may repeat the same decision without changing it.
Can I use my mark to predict a grade?
A past-paper total can provide context, but grade boundaries change by series and a self-marked attempt may not match live conditions. Use the result mainly to identify work. If you compare it with boundaries, use the official boundary for that exact series and avoid treating it as a prediction.
